The exhibition project by Sergio Nannicola and Davide Viggiano at YAG/garage is the result of a convergence of reflections on the state of “emergency” that constantly characterizes the Western world, and Italy in particular. Made in Italy is a globally recognized “brand,” especially when referring to the food and fashion industries; however, over the last fifty years it has also come to refer—provocatively speaking—to an Italian “production” shaped by political failures and the spread of populism.
Sergio Nannicola and Davide Viggiano, teacher and student during their years at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, intersect in their artistic paths through a shared line of inquiry. Nannicola reflects on issues that have fueled—and continue to fuel—the media debate for years: the L’Aquila earthquake, the migration crisis in the Mediterranean Sea, and the health emergency caused by Covid-19. Viggiano, on the other hand, focuses on more existential aspects, bringing the level of interpretation back to the priva te sphere—the artist’s most intimate dimension.
Ultimately, their research denounces the socio -cultural condition that defines our present. Their work constitutes a “narrative” that highlights the two sides of the same coin, where the history of the individual can only be understood when contextualized within a collective system.
