Maria Alfaro is a Mexican-American printmaker, painter, and muralist. Born and raised in the small town of Acumbaro, Michoacan; she emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2016. Here, she recently earned a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2020. After discovering woodblock relief printing in 2018, most of her work has been an exploration of her cultural and contemporary identity as well as tampering on subjects about diaspora. One of her main topics is understanding the broad term "home" , as well as coming to terms with one's personal past. Moving forward, the prints often depict imagery regarding personal narratives and childhood experiences. The nature-driven rural lifestyle imposes our understanding of sanctuary and place of meditation. There is always an emphasis on capturing the smaller things as well as the transcendent beauty of nature which is the main force. The prints, inspired by dreams and automatic writing, are meant to transport the viewer into a different reality, only if they choose to see.
